How to improve the lifetime of solar cells?
Water resistant films
Solar energy is an important source of renewable energy, and an appealing alternative for fossil energy sources. The total amount of solar energy available is several times larger than the current energy consumption. To benefit optimally from solar energy, affordable, robust and clean solar technologies need to be developed.
Photovoltaics use solar modules to convert light into electricity. These solar modules consist of several components, like for instance the solar cell and an EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate) layer. Due to moisture leakage, the average lifetime of the solar modules is limited to about 10 years. To protect the solar module against UV, moisture, and other weather influences, the solar module needs to have a so-called PV back sheet as the outermost layer.
To enhance durability of PV backsheets, Fujifilm has developed a mono-sheet PV backsheet. The manufacturing process of this hydrolysis-resistant PET film uses Fujifilm’s precision coating technology to add a functional layer for the adhesion to the EVA encapsulant. The mono-layer PV backsheet boosts durability up to 30 years and gives excellent adhesion to the encapsulant.
